There’s just something about threading a needle, and the push-pull through fabric. Quilters everywhere know the love-at-first-square feeling. Once bitten, there’s no going back. Quilts are about lineage, love and longing. The road traveled from birth to death. To be a quilt maker is to sit alongside the joyous and the grief-stricken alike.

My quilts are anything but perfect. And although I love them, I typically don’t follow traditional patterns. Rather, I tell stories through patchwork, embroidery and appliqué. Many years ago I worked as a barista. I lived off cash tips and put myself through a nighttime residential design program. My favorite class? The history of the chair, of course. I don’t bring up design school because I think it prepared me. It didn’t. What I want you to know is how much I loved it.

I’ve waited a few decades to serve in this way. Many quilts and many homes later, time-worn dedication has been my greatest teacher.
